INTO THE TREES / DANCING TREES
Trees are like communicating bodies in a landscape, growing in different directions. A metaphor for life. They offer unlimited hospitality to life inside and outside the tree. Inside, we can read the tree's growth from its growth rings. The older the tree, the more guests it has: rodents, birds, insects, fungi, other plants. Climbing vines, burgeoning mushrooms, bird’s nests and hanging mistletoe. All this goes together; light and dark are all around the tree and because of the tree. They perform earth memory.
The paintings are based on drawings and sketches made on location after long hikes and walking travels. Some depict ancient sites high in the mountains near the Norwegian glaciers. These stone sites were once covered by a layer of permafrost; due to factors including climate change, the stones are now visible, along with their characteristic birch trees. From the Baobab in Senegal to the Norwegian and Canadian taiga.
